The nature-orientated island of Madeira offers a lot – and so does the Calheta Boutique Houses where we spent a wonderful week in October/ November 2019.
When I first read an article about the beautiful rustic nature of Madeira and its diversity regarding outdoor activities, I was sure we would have a great time. By the moment we arrived at our beautiful house in Arco da Calheta this feeling just strengthened. The place is very well situated to reach all the interesting places of the island.
The first day we spent some time in Porto Moniz with its fascinating lavapools, before we went to Santana the second day. We can really recommend to take the cable car at Rocha do Navio down to the coast. It’s an absolutely peaceful place with an amazing view to the see and the precipitous coast where only a few tourists convene. The next day was quite packed as we started early in the morning to see the sunrise at the mosteastern point of the island in Ponta da Sao Lourenco. Later on we drove to Archada do Teixeira from where we hiked up to the summit of the highest mountain of Madeira named Pico Ruivo. From there we drove back home along the north coast where we had a stop at Seixal to get a look at the famous black-sanded beach.
The second half of the week was a bit more relaxing as we spent some time at the pool, visited Funchal and went for some whale watching. Unfortunately, I got a knee injury the week before our holidays. Therefore, we had to skip some activities like surfing or scuba-diving. But as we talked to some people, there must be some nice spots around the island to do so.
A few times we went not out for dinner as the kitchen offers all needed cooking stuff to get ready some food by yourself. However, if you want to have dinner somewhere else we can recommend the Italian restaurant Naye close to Loreto as well as the Old Pharmacy in Ponta do Sol where you get some blasting sunsets. Both of the two restaurants are within a 5-10 min drive.
Overall, we had a great time in Madeira which is also due to our stay at Calheta Boutique Houses hosted by lovely Anne and Dave.
